Artist Statement
I am turning twenty-five years old and graduating from college this year, which has led me to reflect on my past lately. I find myself going through old photos and thinking about all the moments of my life that have been documented over the years. In addition, my commute to work and school has conjured up vivid memories of growing up in Jacksonville, Florida. Driving by places such as the beach brings me back to when I was a carefree kid making sandcastles with my sister. While other locations remind me of hardships and tribulations I had to deal with as an adolescent such as having a sister and dealing with jealousy and having a close family to having my parents get a divorce.
For this series, I am exploring my childhood, family's photographic record, and the complicated relationship I have with my relatives. I am creating digital collages that combine aspects of my past, present and written recollections. I am doing this because when I was younger and going through these struggles I do not think I ever really faced it these situations in my young adult life. Memories tend to evolve and fade over times and I think this is a way of giving myself and my memories closure.
